Cookies & analytics

Short version: nothing that tracks you runs until you choose Accept. You can change that decision whenever you like, and this page explains exactly what you'd be agreeing to.

Nothing tracks you before you consent

When you first visit, a banner asks whether you're happy for me to use analytics. Microsoft Clarity loads nothing at all until you accept. Google's analytics tag does load, but in a "consent denied" state - it sets no cookies and collects no personal data until you accept. If you decline, it stays that way; if you accept, full analytics switch on.

What I'd like to measure (only after you accept)

Google Analytics

Google Analytics tells me which entries people actually read and how they arrived - so I know what's worth building next. If you accept, Google sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_<id>) to tell repeat visits apart. This sends usage data to Google, which may process it on servers in the United States.

Microsoft Clarity

Microsoft Clarity shows me anonymised heatmaps and session replays - a reconstruction of how a typical visit moves through a page, so I can spot where a layout confuses people. It does not record keystrokes in form fields, and replays are aggregated, not tied to your identity. If you accept, Clarity sets cookies (such as _clck, _clsk, CLID and MUID) and sends data to Microsoft.

The one cookie that's always on

I store a single value in your browser, uxbx-consent, to remember the choice you made on the banner. It's strictly necessary - it's the thing that stops the analytics above from loading - so it doesn't need consent and never leaves your device. It expires after about a year, at which point I'll ask again.

Changing your mind

You're never locked in. Use the link in the footer (it's on every page) to reopen the banner and switch your choice. If you withdraw consent, the page reloads so the analytics scripts are removed straight away. You can also clear cookies in your browser at any time.

Your rights & getting in touch

Under UK GDPR you can ask what data relates to you, request a copy, or ask me to delete it. For analytics that's largely aggregated and not tied to your name, but if you have any question about it, send a note via the contact form and I'll help.
